I enjoyed this episode over the abomination that was season 1. Pike is 5*, Saru and Stamets are still great, and even Michael is beginning to grow on me this episode. Reno is a great addition too. And I’m glad L’Rell, Klingons, and Ash Tyler never made an appearance. I thought the lighting and special effects was much better in this one too. You can totally tell why Gretchen and co. were fired: blew half of the budget on this thing.

Many of us watch with friends, too, and the noise we make definitely means I have to re-watch! But what a blast!

The debate over the nature of the red angel is reminiscent of the same debate over Bajor’s Prophets, seen as “wormhole aliens” to members of Starfleet. But this season promises to go deeper into this debate and how religion and faith are perceived in the Federation of the future. As for the big mystery itself, “New Eden” didn’t provide any answers yet, but there are hints that the red bursts may be part of some kind of galactic morality test. While it is a minefield, so far this entire foray into the issue of faith remains intriguing and hopefully can avoid some of the heavy-handedness the series dabbled in the first season when dealing with some hot topics.

Certainly operationally, the biggest challenge is getting the development caught up. Despite ground conditions, which are challenging, we are on an acceleration track. And Cosmos, for just a comment on the reserves — and we hit them pretty hard. Clearly, there was mine depletion. There was no drilling in the first half of the year. And so, there really wasn’t time to refine and identify new reserves. But the other thing, we knew that there was a challenge in reconciling the production grades with the mill. And so, we really relooked at the modeling. We narrowed the vein or the size of the vein within the models. And so, we actually — and changed the capping or top cut. And consequently, that represented about half the reserve losses. We’ve been very conservative in our modeling in those — of the existing resources and reserves.

Importantly, they also stayed on the right side of cheesy. Family flashbacks et al. have often made me cringe in past Trek, but they did not feel cheesy in this episode. I particularly want to commend composer Jeff Russo for the subtle and atmospheric music in this episode. Particularly the Angel vision could have been such a cheesy moment drowned out by soppy strings in typical movie score fashion, but instead the subtle and ethereal score succeeded in making it a moment of wonder. Also, the Discovery musical theme worked for me for the first time in the haunting way it was arranged in the final moments of the episode.

The company Tüv Süd found blocked drainage pipes and cracks, and made note of a small wooden structure that had been erected to stop part of the dam from slumping. The company also found water visibly seeping from at least one area, and said there was a risk of liquefaction.

From its opening beatbox freestyle to its closing tongue wag, "Fat Lip" couldn’t have been a better encapsulation of the pop-punk ’00s if it had been directed by a sentient Hot Topic bracelet: It’s all shaved heads, half-pipes, convenience stores, and four-star frosted tips, as the snottiest bunch of snots that ever snotted perform from a literal pit of dirt. For extra flat-sole kicks, check the hair-metal-homaging "Pain for Pleasure" outro that often played with "Fat Lip" on MTV, proving that adolescent rawk brattiness knows no generation gap. – A.U.
