The second episode of Discovery’s second season moves the action into a classic Star Trek story of the exploration of a strange new world. With the show trying to cram a bit too much into the time allotted, director Jonathan Frakes is still able to keep up the pace set in the season opener. Strong performances all around help add new dimensions to both leading characters and some who are emerging from the background. “New Eden” carries the main arc of the season and the mystery of the seven bursts forward, perhaps at the expense of some of the world-building we have come to expect from traditional Trek visits to new planets. The episode is a solid and entertaining hour of Star Trek and keeps the momentum going following the improvements seen in the season premiere.

Any gripes about the 570’s slightly effete styling are well and truly quashed. But if you want to turn your $242,500 LT into something like the car we have here, prepare to dig deeper. That’s actually why I loved the episode First Contact itself. It was a more realistic portrayal of probably what the Federation does when making first contact with a new world by researching them and get a sense how well they would be able handle the idea of meeting a new species. And first contact isn’t made with a shuttle landing on the capitol’s lawn alerting the world at once but by meeting the leaders first and disseminating the idea through them before the public knows. I can’t remember how long the process takes but it sounded like years and much more methodical.

The baseline is an average over a time period – and with climate, the baseline needs to be several decades to capture oscillations 2. Assuming their warp drive is something like hypothetical Alcubierre methods, all other forms of propulsion are still going to be affected by mass. Once again, making efficient use of space relevant.
