Tuesday’s Season 15 finale of The Voice promised to be a real nail-biter. Kirk Jay, heretofore the frontrunner, had had an off night Monday, and Kennedy Holmes had turned in not one, not two but three dazzling performances. They were so good, in fact, that my praise got me accused of being biased. (I think all my enthusiasm for her means is that I prefer contestants who sing like a dream and don’t stand on stage like they’ve been hit by a freeze ray.) But, considering that just last week, the 14-year-old had had to fight for the Instant Save, could she possibly have turned around enough viewers to walk away with the win? Or had Kirk’s stumble just opened the door for Chevel Shepherd or Chris Kroeze, both of whom had fine, if not mind-blowingly good, weeks but, like Kirk, appealed to the massive country vote? A lot of what they said in here can easily be seen as turn of phrase or such. I know this season is going to tackle faith v. science/logic and I hope they handle it without coming down too hard on one side or the other like DS9 did.

Thanks, Larry. Last week, we announced the highest levels of silver, gold, and lead reserves in 128-year history. Total gold reserves reached 2.85 million ounces, an increase of 26% from last year, mostly due to increases in open pits at Casa Berardi as a result of successful surface drilling. Silver reserves grew up 8% to 191 million ounces, primarily from Greens Creek, due to a combination of good drilling results, advanced resource modeling techniques, and improved smelter terms. The increase in resources is also important, because this suggests the potential for increasing reserves in the future.

Regarding the “throwing from their hands” holo magic, I really wonder if they even have left to themselves any place to go for the Picard show which is set nearly 150 years in Discovery’s future. I think we can now safely expect that this show will be wildly more advanced than even the final episode of Voyager, and TNG for sure, even though only set a few decades apart. Because it has to. Seeing the producers are bringing all sorts of Abramstrek tropes into Discovery, I highly doubt they would not ensure internal consistency between Picard and Discovery, even at the expense of TOS and the TNG-era shows.

By joining forces on “Tyrant”, the two emerging stars showed just how well they complement one another – and how much their presence is a boon for the genre. Scientists have tested lava samples from the fissures and can say “with confidence” that magma from Puu Oo and the summit have reached the fissures in the lower East Rift Zone, Stovall said. Magma from the summit and Puu Oo is considered fresher than magma that was coming up earlier in fissures. That had been stored in the ground for decades, possibly from the 1955 lava flow. The fresher magma produces hotter lava flows that move faster and create more voluminous flows with higher lava fountains.

I agree with your assertion about the Jacob getting short shrift in the story. He was the most interesting character on the planet. I can also understand the idea of the episode seeming overfilled. But by the same token, it’s 45 minutes of show. I’m watching it with the commercials, so its taking up the full 60 minute slot, from my perspective. I’ve been rewatching some of favorite episodes from previous series (…as well as seasons 1 and 2 of Enterprise) and I have to say that, accounting for ad time, the pacing of last night’s episode is fairly similar to episodes of other series. I agree, it can seem rushed, but i think that’s just the nature of the “60 minutes with commericals” format. In the age of GOT/big cable tentpole shows with NO commercials, CBSAA format may feel like it chafes the viewership experience a bit. Just my opinion…..
