The way this car steers makes you think of the Senna—and maybe a Caterham. McLaren has stuck doggedly with hydraulic steering assistance when virtually everyone else has jumped ship to electric. It’s not true that electric racks can’t deliver quality feedback— the technology and automotive engineers’ understanding of it has come a long way. No one gets out of a Porsche 918 and complains about the steering feedback. But put them in one after letting them loose in a 600LT across an empty Welsh moorland road shared only with the occasional sheep, and they might make an exception. On the street, the 600LT’s steering may actually be better than the Senna’s, with less kickback and a touch more self-centering action. And the rack feels effortlessly natural. It plugs you into what the front axle is doing and how the road feels, as if you’d had surgery to fuse your wrists with the front control arms. Whether you’re cruising the freeway or attacking curves, there’s never a moment of ambiguity as to what the car is doing. Never a moment when you feel less than connected, less than enthralled by the way this chassis behaves.

The average life time of any given CO₂ molecule in the atmosphere is about 5 years. (This was confirmed by the A-bomb tests that filled the atmosphere with a spike of radiocarbon). Just as a water molecule condenses (and perhaps, freezes in place) … other water molecules replace the ones lost. Similarly, on average, for every CO₂ that gets absorbed, another CO₂ is liberated. The act of absorption does not change the average level of atmospheric CO₂ (well, there is the seasonal upswing and downswing in the Keeling curve) … because it is balanced by outgassing and emission. Similarly, the act of condensing does not cause the atmosphere to suddenly dry out … and it is never zero.

This may be reading into things, but sometimes it felt like the show was speaking directly to its goal of making some changes.  Is there a message about turning the page and perhaps letting go of canon nitpicking in Sarek’s suggestion to “focus on the problem in front of you, rather than what is behind”? Are we sharing Reno’s joy that “no one is speaking Klingon,” saving us from endless subtitles? Surely Pike’s assurance to Burnham that “wherever our mission takes us, we will try to have a little bit of fun along the way” is also a promise to the audience that the darkness of season one has been left behind.

I do wish they’d stopped for a sec and talked it through. Those kinds of things are sometimes more for the audience than the characters, to show thoughtfulness and point out the ethical issues around it. The episode was only 43 minutes long, they certainly had the time to spare.
