I enjoyed “New Eden” but am quite surprised the God question supersedes actual action, leaving us with the breezy edit/tone that is more “meta” than a straight up story. We debate it like Trek fans, with references to previous stories, rules, etc. but I wonder what viewers who have never seen Trek would think about it. Anyone out here watch it with someone like that?

That would be “Telephone,” the gloriously ridiculous, nine-and-a-half-minute spectacle from director Jonas Åkerlund that involves a women’s prison, Beyoncé (ahem, “Honeybee”) feeding Lady Gaga a pastry, a murder at a diner, a poison sandwich-making tutorial, Quentin Tarantino references aplenty, and a dance sequence that has spawned dozens of YouTube tutorials. If all that’s not enough to make “Telephone” an instant classic, consider that the video is actually a continuation of Gaga’s “Paparazzi” video from the year prior, with the same director — which ends with Gaga in the can — and let your mind be blown. To be honest, the reason we get collapsible space helmets now is the advancement of CGI. Something like that would be (almost) impossible to do practically (especially on TV) but you can build anything in CGI and they have also gotten better at integrating live action footage with CGI. If you google for “bike airbag” you will see that people have actually developed a self-deploying helmet for cyclists. It’s hidden in a cover you carry around your neck and deploys over your head. The self-deploying space helmet we see on Discovery is hidden in a backpack belonging to the suit.
