Lower in the diagram on the right shows the drills at Hollister are working to define the mineralization trends in West Gloria, Central Hollister, and Guinevere for near-term mining. The development advancing to the east toward the Hatter Graben provides underground drill platforms for the drilling of targets in the East Clementine area and into the Hatter Graben late in the year. Surface drilling is planned to begin in April, with the goal of extending the Hatter Graben resource to the east.

Eichelberger and his colleagues also face daunting technical challenges. For example, they will need to develop a well casing that won’t buckle when the temperature changes, and they’ll have to protect instrument cables from heat and corrosive gases.  

Who could have predicted that, with all the possibilities of VR, a rhythm action game would become one of the scene’s biggest sensations? But Beat Saber really is that good; not only does it feel great to wield two knock-off lightsabers in hand but the game has razor-sharp mechanics that make slashing and dodging your way through any one of its tracks a real thrill. Impending launches for multiplayer and level editing are only set to sweeten the deal. Don’t turn your nose up at what’s fast becoming one of VR’s all-around best games.

However, things were a bit different on board the USS Discovery. Once it became clear that the planet’s inhabitants were in danger from what seemed like a natural phenomenon, the crew did not hesitate in the decision to save them all, with Saru explicitly saying they were responsible for “every living being” on the planet. While it showed character growth for Saru to keep his ganglia in check when informed of the “extinction level event,” he seems to have forgotten the Prime Directive. Pike was clear before he left the ship that the Prime Directive applied and even after learning the inhabitants were from Earth he was undeterred and stuck to the regulations. But Saru, even without that info, decided without debate to intervene.

We continue our journey back through time with some flashbacks of Michael’s childhood, witnessing the young orphan girl welcomed into the Vulcan home of Sarek and his human wife Amanda. Mia Kirshner continues to impress, adding new dimensions to this familiar character as she offers her blessing to young Michael, one of the many religious tidbits peppered into this episode, which kicks off a season said to deal with the theme of science versus faith. But their young son was not nearly so welcoming, throwing a computer-generated holographic dragon at the frightened young girl before shutting the door in her face.

- Qi’ra’s name is almost certainly taken from "Kira," which was Rey’s original name in the early planning stages for The Force Awakens.  – Qi’ra is Han’s first love. They grew up together on Corellia and ran scams on the streets for Lady Proxima. Qi’ra is at the very least inspired by Han’s first love from The Paradise Snare, Bria Tharen, a member of a wealthy family on Corellia. Han and Bria didn’t actually meet on Corellia but on the planet Ylesia, where Han is hiding out from Garrus Shrike and Bria is suffering from an addiction involving pleasure…I’m not going to go into too much detail on that. Just read the book. – Here’s a deep cut: the form of martial arts Qi’ra and Dryden Vos use in combat is Teras Kasi, which first appeared in the 1996 non-canon novel Shadows of the Empire by Steve Perry. Prince Xizor, the leader of the Black Sun criminal organization (which we’ll get to in a minute), was a master practitioner of Teras Kasi. Darth Maul also practiced this martial arts style in lightsaber combat, which, in retrospect, should have been a tip off that the former Sith apprentice was going to show up in the movie at some point… There was also a really bad Star Wars fighting game developed by LucasArts called Masters of Teras Kasi for the PlayStation. Don’t bother playing it, though.  - Tobias Beckett, played by Woody Harrelson, could also be modeled by a character from The Paradise Snare: Garris Shrike, the captain of the decommissioned troopship Trader’s Luck. From a certain point of view, Shrike’s the guy who raised Han after he was orphaned. In fact, Shrike raised a bunch of orphans to become his own band of thieves. Han eventually escaped Trader’s Luck to join the Imperial Academy, although Shrike plotted to kill the young pilot later.

Reaching magma could be seen as a momentous milestone for humanity. But from the energy companies’ point of view, magma meant failure — a vast energy source that they didn’t yet have the technology to use. So rather than being celebrated, the first ventures into Earth’s molten depths slid quietly under the radar, said Eichelberger.

So, in summary, we had a good 2018 and are very excited about the potential for 2019 and beyond. But now I’ll pass it on to Larry to talk about the operations.
