“Bohemian Rhapsody” has a good time showing how Queen conceived a handful of their iconic hits, from the ominous funk of “Another One Bites the Dust” to the gladiatorial surge of “We Are the Champions.” But for most of the film, the awesome expressiveness of Freddie Mercury, the way he used his voice as an enraptured instrument of agony and ecstasy, isn’t front and center. It’s telling that Queen’s 1976 single “Somebody to Love” isn’t featured in the movie (it’s just background music), because not only is it one of their greatest songs, it’s one of Mercury’s most ardently autobiographical. It could have been an epiphany — but the film backs away from it, because it’s backing away from the emotional bravura of what Freddie Mercury was singing.
The CIL plant upgrade is complete, and the mill is now able to process Hollister ore. We have exceeded our annual development target of 35 feet per day in January, as shown on slide 16, and the goal will be to maintain this level and increase it where possible, because this should open up additional headings and increase production.
Another instance of pure wish fulfillment; Star Trek: Bridge Crew’s cooperative missions in which players pilot Star Fleet ships is a dream come true for many. It’s an incredibly smart example of VR implementation, taking a specific element of a popular franchise that would work really well in VR and then capitalizing on it. The result is an unbeatable feeling of stepping into the world of a sci-fi titan like never before, with plenty of content to beam your way through. Support for standard displays also makes it easy to find a game. The Next Generation DLC only takes it further into awesome territory.
The success of “God’s Plan,” Drake’s gloriously pompous single — and one of Scorpion’s shiniest gems – can’t be overstated. Released just 19 days into 2018, the feel-(mostly)-good hip-hop jam went on to become Drake’s longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1 at 11 weeks, helping Toronto’s music king break chart records previously held by Michael Jackson and The Beatles. So what makes “God’s Plan” so special? Simply that it’s all just so Drake — from the track’s endlessly quotables lines and PG-rated references (“don’t pull up at 6 AM to cuddle with me”) to its groan-worthy shout-outs to “the broskis” and his mom. Of course, all this was helped along by a viral (and instantly meme-able) music video directed by fellow Canadian Karena Evans, in which a chummy, grinning Drake gives away nearly $1 million to people on the streets of Miami. But let’s be honest: The fact that Drake can credit his lifestyle to divine intervention without anyone batting an eye says more about his undeniable superstardom than any chart record or award ever could. – T.C.
Like the song itself, the 2002 music video for “Without Me” is a fragmentation grenade of rapid-fire images designed to level Eminem’s critics – most of which he plays in the video himself. The rapper uses battery cables to fry a quasi-mechanical Dick Cheney lookalike and flips off his mother Debbie (Em in a blond metal wig, natch) as she appears on a When Sons Go Bad talk show. And Shady Records lieutenant Obie Trice, in a cameo, body slams Em-as-Moby, who called Shady’s music homophobic and misogynistic. But the real thrill of this clip is watching Shady and partner-in-crime Dr. Dre dressed, respectively, as comic-book characters Robin and Blade, head-bouncing with abandon as they rush to save a minor from purchasing a copy of The Eminem Show, which carries a Parental Advisory sticker. – F.D.
The FX comedy about two anti-relationship people (Chris Geere and Aya Cash) in a toxic romance made a positive impression on critics in its first two seasons, which are currently available to stream on Hulu. There’s soon to be even more “You’re the Worst” available soon now that Season 3 has ended, so until then, the show should be a top priority to watch.
What’s that mean, James? What does it mean, “show a strong maximum in spectral cooling in the FIR wavelengths, through the mid and upper troposphere” Doesn’t that MAXIMUM differ from yours?
With her storied fairytale come-up, Cardi would be the one to inject new thrill into flexing wealth, a hip-hop tradition as time-honored as the genre itself. In the year and a half since “Bodak Yellow” debuted, watching Cardi relish in her newfound celebrity status somehow still hasn’t gotten old — if what she wants are Balenciagas, the ones that look like socks, who are we to deny her? And there’s something world-shifting about seeing the Afro-Caribbean Cardi and her reggaetón co-stars revive Peter Rodriguez’s half-a-century-old boogaloo hit, a genre that was born in Cardi’s native New York. “I never thought it was going to last for 50 years,” the now 86-year-old Rodriguez told Billboard, and his awe at the carnivorous, unifying, ever-surprising landscape of music in 2018 speaks for everyone — who would have foreseen the Latin trap explosion currently overtaking the world, or that a “regular degular shmegular girl from the Bronx” would become one of hip-hop’s biggest superstars? The world is Cardi’s for the taking in “I Like It,” and it’s all of ours too. Cha-ching! – T.C.

But given the entrenched competition from the likes of Netflix, it’ll have plenty to overcome before it’s a star
